What is Circular RNA?

  • Circular RNAs are covalently closed single-stranded RNA, naturally produced via back-splicing of pre-mRNA exon(s) in eukaryotic cells

  • Broadly expressed in metazoans, but generally at low levels with cell/tissue-specific patterns

  • Inherent stability with resistance to known exonucleases

  • Can be engineered and produced in vitro via in vitro transcription and circularization
